Leaders today are operating in an environment of sustained uncertainty and volatility, and for many people, the demands of working life have become increasingly difficult to switch off from. It’s therefore unsurprising that burnout remains a serious challenge facing leaders and their teams. As many as [75% of people suffer from burnout](https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2026/feb/15/75-of-people-suffer-from-burnout-what-you-need-to-know), and while work is far from the only cause, it can have major implications for ambition and productivity. So what can leaders do to prevent burnout in themselves and their teams?

**Burnout puts ambition at risk**

Regardless of the cause, people are unlikely to commit to their life’s best work or deliver breakthroughs when they’re burnt out. Curiosity, passion and innovation can all suffer, and once that energy has been depleted, it can be difficult to recover.

There are many reasons why burnout occurs, and the pressures facing people at work can vary considerably. For some, an already demanding workload can become harder to manage when priorities are constantly shifting or expectations keep changing. Others may struggle with a lack of social connection, limited support or the feeling that they are always expected to be available.

The pressure to maintain productivity can also become part of the problem. When the focus is entirely on getting through the immediate workload and meeting short-term targets, there’s little room to think more ambitiously about what comes next. Sustained performance requires people to have the energy and headspace to explore opportunities and approach challenges with curiosity.

Leaders need to look beyond immediate output and consider whether the way their teams are working is sustainable. Without that perspective, the conditions that contribute to burnout can become embedded, gradually eroding the ambition and creativity needed for longer-term success.

**Understanding what your people need**

Leaders need to be present to their people and understand the pressures they are experiencing. It is easy to approach burnout by thinking about what would cause it in you personally, but everyone is different, and what affects one person may have little impact on another.

Leaders need to listen with empathy and try to understand their teams from different perspectives. There may be issues affecting everyone, such as a lack of access to resources or uncertainty about changing priorities. But there are also likely to be individual challenges that go unnoticed because they don't appear significant from someone else's point of view.

This means taking the time to understand the experience of each member of the team. People have different circumstances, working styles and communication preferences, all of which influence how they respond to pressure.

Someone living alone may be struggling with isolation, while a colleague with children at home might be finding it difficult to manage competing responsibilities. There are countless other circumstances that might seem relatively minor to someone else but have a significant impact on the person experiencing them, and consequently on the team as a whole.

The role of a leader is to stay close to these different experiences and make time for meaningful conversations. Regularly checking in with people, asking open questions and being genuinely interested in their answers can help identify issues before they become more serious. It also means recognising that burnout can show up differently in different people, so there is no single approach that will work for everyone.

**Creating the conditions for sustainable performance**

No judgement should be attached to people experiencing burnout. It’s not a reflection of their ability or resilience, but can be the result of a combination of individual circumstances, working styles and pressures.

These differences are part of what makes a team diverse, and leaders need to understand them if they want people to perform at their best. That means looking beyond standard approaches to workload and wellbeing, and considering whether the environment gives people the support and flexibility they need.

With uncertainty continuing to shape working life, leaders have an important role in making sure their teams have the space to adapt without becoming overwhelmed. That starts with paying attention to how people are really doing, rather than making assumptions based on what appears to be happening on the surface.
