A Breakthrough Under the Streets of London

1) THE SECRET TO SUCCESS:  The Power of Mindset

“Confidence is just displayed ability”  - a quote from a recent blog on the traits of highly successful people that really resonated with us.  The concept in discussion here is that of taking action by displaying your ability to do something well, again and again, as a contributor for creating a powerful mindset.  This concept is not new and in fact for us is something that is core to the methodology that we use when seeking meaningful and sustainable change.

What we liked about this blog is that the handful of analogies drawn from the sporting world makes this distinction really accessible.  Every day, we observe within our team, our clients and ourselves the power that confidently acting from a commitment that you’ve made has. The results that a possibility based mindset can bring for the individual and their organisations are remarkable and this specific way of thinking and acting is often instrumental in becoming a true breakthrough organisation.

2) WORLD NEWS:  A Breakthrough Under the Streets of London

Last week saw a first for the city of London – a 1,000 tonne boring machine made its way under the eastern end of Liverpool Street station in the opening stages of the topical Crossrail project.  Named “Elisabeth” after the Queen herself, the machine has another 2460ft to bore until it reaches the end of the line, which will form one of the longest parts of the tunnel system.

And all this going on under our feet!

We are inspired by this miraculous feat of engineering and it serves as an achievement that our country can be proud of.

3) ACHIEVE BREAKTHROUGH IN THE PRESS: Man in the Middle

Founder of Achieve Breakthrough, Mike Straw, was a guest contributor to EPM Magazine this month. In this insightful piece, Mike shares some of his views around the net effect of the changes affecting the pharmaceutical industry and how part of the solution lies in the underutilization of an existing asset – the people trapped in the “frozen middle”.

The honest and practical piece provides a number of compelling insights that are applicable for leaders in any industry.  Read more here.

4) EMERGING BREAKTHROUGHS IN BUSINESS: The Changing Paradigm of “Value”

The challenges that managing the scale and pace of change are not discriminate by industry.  They are, however, felt most acutely within the healthcare sector simply because its entire ecosystem is increasingly complex with more decision makers involved in any key process or purchasing decision.

One of the impacts of this changing landscape was reported this month by McKinsey who evidenced an emerging trend in producing products that are “good enough” to serve a new subset of value customers.  The article made us reflect on the challenge that many leaders face, the oxymoronic notion of paying less and having more and of customers who, whilst concerned about price,  “… they also have standards for product quality, efficacy, safety, and service. They are generally reluctant to pay for additional features or services.”

The challenge of doing less, with more and often being required to do so at an ever-quickening pace, are cited by our clients weekly as the seemingly unattainable targets that they are faced with.  To deliver in these environments requires the ability to step outside of the predictable route to growth and instead adopt a commitment based on what’s possible for the organisation and often the industries in which it operates.

5) FOLLOWING THE RAINBOW HUNTERS:  In Search of Orange

Our friend and colleague Lindsay Hawdon enters a colourful new chapter in her quest to find seven different colours in seven different countries with her two sons this month.  Linked to her debut novel released in April 2015, Jakobs Colours, the book and the accompanying journey of Lindsay and her family are providing us all with delightful stories of possibility and inspiration.

6) STORY FOR INSPIRATION: The Emotional Side of a Technological Breakthrough

We were inspired by a story featured recently in one of our favourite blogs by the Huffington Post.  The story tells us about Kathy Beitz, a woman who entered the world without the blessing of sight.  When she too became a mother, her one wish was to be able to capture the image of her son on the day that he was born.

Through a combination of a camera, advanced computing techniques and display technology, American organsiation eSight were able to help Kathy to do exactly that.  She saw her son.

The moment was captured on video.
